How to lower your investment fees

Donald M. Fink has over 40 years’ experience in helping clients with investments and increasing their retirement portfolio. We’ve seen many cases over the years where our clients have lost thousands on fees that was unnecessary for and therefore we always recommend checking their investment fees.

A recent calculation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission shows that after investing $100,000 over 20 years with an annual return of 4%, an investor paying 0.25% in annual fees has a portfolio worth $210,000. That same investment over the same period but incurring a 1% annual fee is worth just $180,000. The difference of $30,000 can be pretty drastic, especially if you are going to retire in 5 years or less.

A few tips to prevent such leaks are:

  • Always check your statements
  • Review your projections if you have an online tool
  • Check in with your financial advisory every year to ensure you are on track
  • Seek additional investment funds that are lower in fees
